Zeller, Irving Zeller, Irving a resident of Highland Park and former long time
resident of both Willmette and Glencoe, Illinois passed away Monday December
13 at the age of 91. Loving husband of Lee (Friedman), devoted father of Dr.
Clifford (Karen) and Susan, proud grandfather of Benjamin (Emily), Matthew
and Jonathan (Zeller), Cally and Katie (Tucker) and great-grandfather of
Laurel (Zeller). Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Mr. Zeller grew up in Chicago and
attended Marshall High School. Mr. Zeller proudly served in WWII. He
was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army's 95th Infantry Division and fought in
several major engagements, including the Battle of Metz. He was also
decorated by the Army as a Sharpshooter. Mr. Zeller graduated Northwestern
University and went on to earn a Masters Degree. He loved his
career, a long time principal in the Chicago Public Schools, Mr. Zeller was
an innovative teacher and combined both his music and education backgrounds
to set up programs and activities. He established one of the first Drum and
Bugle Corps for Chicago students. Mr. Zeller told the story that The Chicago
Woman's Symphony Orchestra hired him to play bass in the orchestra when they
could not find an appropriate musician to play with the all-woman ensemble.
Mr. Zeller played bass with well-known entertainers including Jack Benny,
Danny Kaye, The Count Basie Orchestra and many others. Mr. Zeller was a
lifetime member of the Chicago Federation of Musicians. Services were held
December 17 at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, Arlington Heights, In lieu of
